The Blaze will last the life of the tree. In the event that the tree is blown down or dies the blaze can easily be moved to another tree.
Blazes mounted in a relatively wet environment in which mold and moss easily grows may need to be cleaned every 3-5 years to maintain like new condition. The cleaning process is spray bottle with 50/50 mix of bleach and water. Simply spray the blaze and the liquid will kill all moss and mold on the blaze.
In the event that the blaze has not been cleaned for many year it may require a little agitation with a small bristle brush.
This maintenance, if required, would be done as part of a trail maintenance program.
Short answer is YES.
However here is some insight into how the product is made and why if is difficult to provide them at lower cost.
Blazes are manually cut from large 1/2" sheet stock.
All 90 degree edges are routed to provide a round edge. Rectangle blazes have 12 edges that require individual router passes. The Triangle blazes have 9 edges that require individual router passes.
Each blaze is then fixtured to provide a drill scribe marks.
Blazes are then drilled with 2 holes.
Finally all blazes other than white are painted on all surfaces requiring about 8 light coats of paint.
Finally after drying and curing they are packaged for shipment.
Yes our process is labor intensive but trail blazes are a niche market not lending itself to justifying mass production.
Larger projects exceeding 1000 markers will result in a discount.
Re blazing should be done as part of trail restoration or maintenance.
Let's assume that tails have NOT been maintained for 10 years.
Most blazes are faded and stretched as tree growth has split the blaze and cracked what is left of the paint.
Much new growth may need to be removed or cut back.
Do not assume that existing blaze locations are the best. Install blazes where they make the most sense use as few as possible..
Use a temporary plastic fluorescent 1" wide marking tape cut into 6" lengths that can be stapled to a potential blaze mark on a tree.
Walk the trail and temporarily mark trail as you travel each way.
Purchase camouflage FLAT spray paint. Usually dull green. Spray over old blazes.
Temporarily blaze trail such that the temporary blaze is at about 6' above ground. You will install the actual blaze at a height of about 5'. The idea is that the blaze should be at eye level to facilitate easy identification.
Caution temporary blazing must be done during foliage season. If you blaze after leaves have dropped those blazes may not be visible once trees have leaves.
